Ameren Missouri’s Renewable Solutions program
Ameren Missouri’s Renewable Solutions program provides its customers with ready-made renewable supply solutions backed by new renewable generation facilities owned and operated by Ameren Missouri. Through the Renewable Solutions program, Ameren Missouri customers can cover up to 100% of their energy usage with renewable resources via straightforward subscription arrangements with simple and predictable pricing components and a host of additional benefits over other alternative renewable supply acquisition arrangements.
An innovative approach to the customer subscription process
Following the successful full enrollment of the first phase of its Renewable Solutions program, backed by the 150-MW Boomtown Renewable Energy Center, Ameren Missouri sought to initiate a second program phase directed towards a broader base of its eligible customers.
The second phase of the Renewable Solutions program would be backed by another 150-MW solar resource, the Cass County Renewable Energy Center, and would require an innovative approach to the customer subscription process to equitably establish both customer subscription levels and a uniform rate structure.
Working together to establish structured subscription auction events
- Ameren Missouri’s goal was to manage a structured, highly transparent, subscription process and companion electronic auction events to establish a base of subscribers fairly and competitively for the second phase of its Renewable Solutions program.
- Our Advisory Services team developed a comprehensive suite of customer-facing materials to aid customers in their evaluation of the Renewable Solutions program, qualify and quantify customer demand within the second phase of the program, and provide structured training in support of the subscription process auction event hosted on the Enel Auction Platform.
- The subscription auction event was structured as a forward multi-round ascending clock auction event that enabled customers to “bid” desired levels of subscription at rates at which they would be willing to subscribe to such. The auction progressed with ascending rates until a point was reached where total demand (the sum total “bid” subscription levels) dropped below the total available capacity associated with the phase two resource, at which point an ending auction round was triggered.
- The auction event ultimately concluded with several organizations receiving subscription quantities at a uniform pricing structure that enabled Ameren Missouri to obtain approval from the Missouri Public Service Commission to ultimately acquire the phase two backing resource and effectively double the size of its Renewable Solutions program.
