Massachusetts’ booming clean energy workforce

As the U.S. grapples with addressing and reversing the climate crisis, the public and private sectors are making bold commitments and investments to support decarbonization and electrification, giving rise to the green-collar workforce.

Nowhere is this more evident than in Massachusetts, where the Commonwealth has experienced an 89% increase in clean energy employment since 2010, adding nearly 54,000 jobs to the local economy.

As we look ahead, we can expect this growth to continue gaining momentum, driven by ambitious but achievable policy goals, corporations’ increased sustainability commitments, and the urgent threat of global warming.

In Massachusetts, state policymakers have signed some of the most aggressive climate policies in the nation: the Massachusetts Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2030, the Massachusetts 2050 Decarbonization Roadmap, and the creation of a $750 million Clean Energy Investment Fund. These are paving the way for the Commonwealth to expand its leadership in clean energy and climate change and spur sustainable economic development.


These factors spell job opportunities for the clean energy workforce and those in adjacent fields.

As one of Massachusetts’ largest clean energy companies, we’ve operated in the Commonwealth for over 20 years with the sole purpose of advancing a sustainable energy transition through our renewable energy business, Enel Green Power; advanced energy services business, Enel X; and energy management business, Enel Energy and Commodity Management.

A regional arm of the Enel Group, a multinational power company and one of the world’s largest renewable energy companies, Enel North America will continue to play a leading role in the industry’s growth. By 2024, we plan to invest approximately $8.3 billion to drive renewable energy growth in the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, we accelerated our global net-zero commitment by 10 years, aiming to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2040. This includes both direct and indirect emissions, exiting the production and sales of gas by 2040 and reaffirming our coal exit by 2027.

This planned growth is also accelerating our hiring plans. We’re actively recruiting for more than 200 current openings, and we anticipate reaching around 40% growth in headcount from 2020 to the end of 2022.


In Massachusetts, opportunities for clean energy career-seekers go beyond jobs in renewable power production.

In the past year, Enel has experienced an uptick in partnerships with Massachusetts organizations, including HP HoodBiogen Inc, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, and the University of Massachusetts Boston. These deals ranged from power purchase agreements with Enel Green Power to fleet electrification and on-site solar and battery installation through Enel X.

We've also worked with Kraft Sports + Entertainment since 2017 to improve sustainability in Gillette Stadium, supplying renewable energy credits from locally generated clean energy and installing electric vehicle smart charging stations throughout Patriot Place.
