Green hydrogen

Decarbonize your organization’s hard-to-abate industrial processes by integrating green hydrogen into your energy and sustainability strategy.

What Is Green Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is the tool to mitigate your carbon impact

Facing high emissions and decarbonization targets, organizations in hard-to-abate sectors are looking for a custom approach to meeting their specific needs. They do not have viable electrification alternatives but require hydrogen as feedstock, a high-grade heat source, or a transportation fuel. Companies in industries that already use hydrogen as feedstock – including chemicals, refining, semiconductors, and other industrial manufacturing – are well positioned today to take advantage of sustainability opportunities presented by green hydrogen.

Advance your sustainability goals, stand out from competition, and ensure greater control over energy pricing and feedstock sourcing with green hydrogen from Enel North America. We can help you embed green hydrogen into your energy and sustainability strategy to decarbonize your hard-to-abate industrial processes, tailoring an approach to address your energy requirements across the entire energy transition roadmap.

How It Works

How does green hydrogen work?

Green hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier and feedstock. It is the outcome of the electrolysis process, which uses renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Because the production of green hydrogen does not emit any greenhouse gases, it can help organizations meet clean energy demand and advance ambitious decarbonization targets.

Today around 95% of the hydrogen used by industry globally is obtained from fossil fuels by reforming methane (natural gas) or coal gasification. Because these processes generate massive carbon emissions and are damaging for the environment, the resulting hydrogen is called “grey” if the source is natural gas and “black” or “brown” if the source is coal. Green hydrogen is an identical substitute to fossil fuels-based hydrogen. However, it is a sustainable form of hydrogen because it is produced via an industrial process that does not generate any greenhouse gases. As a result, green hydrogen stands apart from fossil fuels-based forms of hydrogen that generate carbon emissions but rely on carbon emissions capture and storage to be considered cleaner.

The commercial viability of green hydrogen is possible today because of the maturation of two technologies – electrolyzers and renewable energy. In addition, the Inflation Reduction Act’s incentives for renewables and green hydrogen have the potential to significantly reduce the cost of green hydrogen production. Favorable economics and maturing technologies present opportunities for organizations seeking to decarbonize their hard-to-abate industrial processes and meet their sustainability goals.

Choosing the right configuration for your organization requires a consultative approach. Here are essential questions Enel considers as we work with you to assess green hydrogen utilization at your facility:

Market conditions, including regulated vs deregulated RTO/energy market

Daily hydrogen or energy consumption

Grid connection and capacity availability

Site characteristics – available real estate, electric infrastructure, water availability, etc.

Storage requirements

The quality of the hydrogen needed for the industrial application
